DrumFrame Philosophy

Building a strong spirit for drumming is our key motivation for everything we develop at DrumFrame. Our desire is to create innovative cutting edge products that will inspire drummers and non-drummers alike to play the drums more often and for longer periods of time. We hope that new ideas about drumming will stir public interest. The more people are moved, the stronger our spirit becomes.

This is an era of extreme technological development. We believe the public is receptive to change and we are depending on our customers' "pioneering spirit" to assist us in developing new ways to play the drums.

Remember, the spirit in the drum is the spirit in you.
The DrumFrame is Therapeutic

Practice safe drums! It is commonly known that there is risk of injury when sitting in the open, unsupported seat format for extended periods of time. In fact, in the first month of the DrumFrame's release to the public, more than 50% of all our phone calls were injury related! One has to ask, where else do we sit on drum-type seats in the world today? The answer is hardly anywhere. The next question: where do we sit in reclined seats?...Everywhere! If common sense prevails, then it is logical that we consider sitting in a reclined position at the drum set. The problem has been that it is impossible to effectively sit in a reclined position at the drums without reclining the drum set as well. The DrumFrame is the solution.

The DrumFrame environment imposes correct postural habits on the drummer. Acting as a brace, even practicing at the DrumFrame will improve the drummer's posture at the traditional kit.

The open unsupported stool format imposes no physical advantage in assuring correct posture and efficiency in motion. In fact, a substantial amount of energy is exerted just balancing on the stool; energy that could be focused more on playing the drums. Any drummer that plays long shows or practices many hours will immediately recognize the advantages of the DrumFrame.

Peter Behnke- PT, A.T.C.

We have been graced with the counseling and guidance of Peter Behnke. Peter is a noted Physical Therapist who works in musical, sports, and work environment therapy. He has offices in West Hartford and Simsbury, CT and within the Travelers Insurance Group. He works directly with many of the gold medalist and world champion skaters training at the Simsbury Ice Skating facility. Here is what Peter has to say about the DrumFrame:

"My first exposure to the DrumFrame was in Bob's studio. He played on a traditional kit and then duplicated his set-up on the first wooden prototype of the DrumFrame. His intuitions were accurate. The DrumFrame format displayed obvious advantages in playing the drum set. Now that we have done our homework, we have uncovered medical research that supports the idea that creating additional back support to reposition the spine increases mobility of the extremities (arms and legs). These are critical elements in developing a relaxed and flowing feel at the drums.

In a sense, the DrumFrame acts as a foundation for correcting poor postural habits easily formed on conventional kit set-ups. Time spent on the DrumFrame will provide conditions that automatically improve your posture and in turn...performance, regardless of your set-up".

What is the DrumFrame?

The DrumFrame, a Reclined Performance Mechanism (RPM), is an evolutionary design that affects the drum set in every way. Once seated in the cockpit-like environment of the DrumFrame you will immediately sense a more stabilized and comfortable feeling at the kit. The DrumFrame mechanism suspends the drummer and the drum set in a reclined position allowing the natural laws of gravity to work in favor of performance. The drummer can effortlessly sit back into the ergonomically designed seat which affects specific muscle groups, allowing greater mobility and freer movement in the arms and legs.

Additionally, the Reclined Performance Position affects the rebound of the drumsticks and the bass drum pedal. There is less resistance to rebound which changes the sensation of the movements in the hands, and especially, the feet. You will feel the sensation of relaxed, focused power.

There are two DrumFrame components. The BasicFrame places you, the snare drum, hi-hat, and bass drum in the reclined performance position. The FrameWork can be added to rack up all the drumset components and is connected to the basic Frame. The FrameWork insures maximum consistency in set-up while taking full advantage of Shared Vibrational Energy (SVE).
Building a Foundation for Performance from the Bottom Up

During our research we found that often, many drummers develop their drum set up by giving greatest consideration to the movement of the arms rather than the legs. Seems logical, but the reality is that it's like having a beautifully polished car with worn out shocks, tires, and brakes. Compromising leg positioning for a set-up that is totally derivative of the upper body motions is backwards thinking. The lower extremities represent some of the largest muscle groups in our body and are less facile than the upper extremities, the arms, wrists, and hands. One of the key elements in establishing "good time" is laying a strong foundation in the technique of hi-hat and bass drum. The DrumFrame concept fully addresses this issue by imposing key physical elements on the drummer. The technique of the seat to pedal trajectory is designed to increase dexterity and dynamic sensitivity in the legs and feet.

Symmetry and balance in the legs, hips, and lower back are key factors leading to efficient total body mechanics. The bottom must come first.
Consistency in Set-Up

It is impossible to set up the traditional drum set exactly the same each time. It is not likely that the key components, the bass drum, snare drum, hi-hat, and finally the stool can be placed in exactly the same position every time we set up. There are too many angles to deal with. Any inaccuracies in placing these key components correctly on the floor lead to that uncomfortable feeling in drum set-up. The angle of the bass drum is slightly off, the stool is over too far, the hi-hat legs are colliding with the snare stand- these are many of the reasons why, once completely set up, the drum set can feel out of sync. The discomfort always emanates from the bottom of the kit (There's that "bottoms up" thing again). Each time we sit down to play we are dealing with a range of comfort that varies from "tonight, the set feels great" to continually fussing and adjusting with stand settings in an attempt to find that beloved comfort zone we call "home".

The beauty of the DrumFrame is that all the settings are infinite and totally repeatable; however, once you lock into your personalized set-up, it never varies.
The Feel and Sound

Now that the drums and the drummer are suspended into a single unit with only four points of contact with the floor, the response and feel of the drums is greatly affected. The physical vibration of each drum is transferred through the DrumFrame mechanism directly to the stool. This connects the drummer to the drums...it's like wearing the drums. For the first time, the relationship between drums and drummer becomes increasingly intimate.

The drums vibrate more freely in the DrumFrame system due to Shared Vibrational Energy transferred through the system. The bass drum is especially affected. It is suspended on three points and faces upwards, away from the floor, allowing full sound radiation. The bass drum is lifted so that the pedal beater hits the center of the head making the sound of smaller bass drums much larger. The pedal beater feel is more solid by hitting the center of the head.
The Look

The drums look as though they are suspended in mid air. There is no doubt the DrumFrame look is radical and immediately identifiable. On stage, effective under-lighting can really enhance your stage presence. The suspended look has a built-in "riser" effect and there is no need to carry a rug anymore. In fact, the DrumFrame feel is maximized when placed on a hard floor. The DrumFrame makes any set look exciting.
The DrumFrame is Designed for all Drums

The DrumFrame will accommodate all brands of drums and drum set-ups. Electronic drum pads mounted on the DrumFrame work especially well due to the fact that you will feel more physical vibration from the trigger pad, increasing contact with the instrument. Electronic drums can feel cold, especially with headphone use. Unlike acoustic drums where sonic (sound) energy impacts the drummer, electronic pads do not produce much sound. If silent practicing is necessary than the DrumFrame can really enhance your practice time.
Material

The DrumFrame is made of high quality aluminum alloy. The unit is "TIG" (Tungsten Inert Gas) welded. TIG welding is of the highest quality. It is the same welding process used in the aeronautics industry. The finish is "hard coat" anodized,is extremely durable and represents the highest quality anodizing process available.

Weight

The weight of the BasicFrame is approximately 50 lbs.
